
Minutes of November 13, 2005 OCBCF Meeting
Location: Susan Polgar Chess Center. Present (officers): George Tintera, President; Ken Muir, Secretary; Dan De Leon?, 1st VP; Chris Villarreal, Treasurer. Absent: Augie Rivera, 2d VP. Also present: Eddie Rios, Bob and Lucy James, Cris De Leon?, Randy Ramirez, Rebecca Flanigan, Teresa Gauntt, Charlene Tintera, Ninfa Villarreal, Elma Salazar, Hellene Gonzalez, Adam Carney and Robert Mendoza, Roy Robinson.
George Tintera brought the meeting to order at 2:00.
Old business:
Treasurer’s Report: Chris Villarreal presented handouts showing to date OCBCF has netted approximately $1200. Current OCBCF balance is $22, 528.54.
Wynn Seale tournament: Ken reported the tournament went well with help of the volunteer T Ds and the facility was good. The issue of perceived inadequate numbers of trophies was discussed.
Kingsville tournament this past weekend: Eddie reported the tournament went well.
Upcoming tournaments and new business:
Roy and Eddie discussed upcoming Robstown tournament for this coming weekend.
Charlene reported Share your Christmas tournament will be on December 14th, there is a December 7th registration deadline. Cap of 200 players at St. Pius. Windsor Park is sponsoring. Randy Ramirez discussed also. Ken and Teresa volunteered as T Ds among others.
December 17 Polgar tournament for George Evans was discussed by Dan De Leon?.
January 21 National Girls tournament was discussed by Dan De Leon?. Bob will be Chief TD. Brownsville will be sending a couple of hundred players. Cap is 600-700 players. Deadline for cheaper registration fee is December 1.
February 18 Flour Bluff Primary School tournament, Ken discussed. PTA and school have approved, Ken will work on flier and coordinate with George.
Discussion was commenced by Ninfa from the Scholarship Committee. The issue is whether and how OCBCF can best provide new USCF membership scholarships to financially needy students. One option discussed was raising the OCBCF tournament fee for running tournaments to $2.50. The project was tabled and returned to the scholarship committee for further study.
Augie Rivera was not present but is still working on insurance.
George reported that Cullen Middle School will get some OCBCF chess sets.
George reported that Ed Partridge the accountant has reported that he is working on getting OCBCF a state tax exemption.
George reported that Ginger Hier of the Center for Academic Excellence is talking to him about getting more support from CCISD for chess.
A motion was made and passed unanimously for George to go ahead and install a links page for chess related to the OCBCF web page.
Eddie discussed his idea of holding unrated tournaments to encourage new players to play chess, as the entry fees would be less.
Eddie asked for financial assistance on behalf of Adam Carney and Robert Mendoza, two high school students in Kingsville who have helped out as T Ds at a couple of chess tournaments and who are seeking to go on a NJROTC trip to Amsterdam (school related). A motion was made to assist the two students with $150 apiece for the trip on the proviso that they would report to OCBCF at a subsequent meeting on the “chess scene” in Amsterdam/Europe. The motion passed 8-2.
The next OCBCF meeting date was not set.
