Minutes June 25, 2005 End of Year Meeting
Present (officers): George Tintera, President; Ken Muir, 2nd VP. Absent: Orpha Valverde, Treasurer, and Lisa Rueles, secretary.
Also Present: Norma Muir, Bob and Lucy James, Elizabeth James, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Rios, Roy Robinson, John Dubois, Rebecca Flannigan, Teresa Gauntt, Judy Winston-Ruiz, Elma Salazar, Daniel De Leon?, Chris De Leon?, Chris and Ninfa Villarreal, Charlene Tintera, Bert Quintanilla, Irma Gonzales, Randy Ramirez, Bill Wheeler, James R. Shaw, Yeung Yiu. Absent: Augie Rivera.
George Tintera brought the meeting to order at 3:15. All attendees introduced themselves in turn.
George announced that during the past year there were five new club TD’s in the area, and three new Local TD’s including Ken Muir and George and Charlene Tintera. Discussion was had concerning volunteering needed for chess activities at Cliff Maus Village, and a list was circulated. Bill Wheeler, Dan De Leon?, Judy Winston Ruiz and Ken Muir signed up as willing to be called for volunteering. Ken made a motion to donate up to 8 sets to Cliff Maus which was not acted on but appeared to fall under current OCBCF tradition of donating sets to scholastic clubs.
George talked about the application for tax exempt status he is coordinating with accountant Ed Petri by end of June, 2005. Ken made a motion to apply for tax exempt status, seconded and approved without dissent.
Bob James spoke about his efforts to run for president of Texas Chess Association and stated that he would appreciate votes, and that people can join through the web site texaschess.org by June 30 and receive the ballot.
George went over the upcoming 2005-06 scholastic tournament schedule. The Beginner’s Tournament, an OCBCF tournament is scheduled for Sept. 10 at Central Catholic school, contact person is Dan De Leon?. Cris De Leon? announced she will be the new coach for that school in the fall.
Sept. 17 will be the Callallen HS tournament, an OCBCF tournament organized by Ray Contreras (John Dubois). George is the tentative contact person. George feels local TD’s should be the chief TD’s for the tournament.
October 8 will be the St. Patrick’s Shamrock Classic Scholastic, with OCBCF assistance. St. Patrick’s school number is 852-1211 and present on behalf of the school were Rebecca Flannigan and Teresa Gauntt.
April 1st will also be the Region VII girls tournament at St. Patricks.
October 29 will be the Wynn Seale/Chula Vista tournament at Wynn Seale. Judy Winston Ruiz and Elma Salazar were in attendance on behalf of the school.
November 12th is the Kingsville Shootout. Eddie Rios will run it and would appreciate local TD assistance.
November 19th was suggested as the Robstown Tournament date but due to conflicts with State Grades Robstown will look into October 1st as a date. (Roy Robinson).
December 10th is Share your Christmas, sponsored by Windsor Park, unknown location.
The Islander Cup was suggested for October 1 but due to concerns expressed over the number of tournaments scheduled for the fall, was moved to unknown date in the spring.
The Region VII Scholastic will be January 21st, with $2 per head support. The Susan Polgar National Open for Girls will be January 27-29. Bob James will be running it, rooms arranged at the Ramada Hotel, Corpus Christi. [Dan De Leon?, contact person].
Spring tournament discussion was tabled for now.
Election of Officers for 2005-06 occurred. Nominated, seconded and approved by acclamation were George Tintera, President; Dan De Leon?, 1st VP; Augie Rivera, 2d VP; Chris Villarreal, Treasurer; Ken Muir, secretary.
Eddie Rios was recognized for his outstanding contributions to scholastic chess in the Coastal Bend with a signed tournament board.
The next TD tournament is July 24 at the Polgar Chess center, open-gender.
A special meeting for local and senior T Ds to discuss TD policy will be held on Sunday July 17 at Ken Muir’s house. Club T Ds will not participate in this meeting but will be trained further at a later time.
The next OCBCF meeting will be August 28, 2:00 at Polgar Chess Center.
