Old business:
a. Bob and Augie are continuing efforts to see how CCISD can be persuaded to support scholastic chess. Eddie and Ninfa are also on the committee and anyone is welcome to assist.
b. Bob James provided information on a site which could routinely host chess tournaments for a fee of $300. The name of the site is Corpus Christi Events Center, phone 361-852-5333, address 3126 Holly Road, Carol Annette Creely, Rental Director.
c. A TD tournament was held on August 9 at the house of Ken Muir. Another one will be scheduled when there is sufficient demand and schedules permit.
New business:
a. Augie mentioned that he is interested in having a "celebrity" tournament in conjunction with a scholastic tournament to raise awareness of scholastic chess, with the idea of inviting local politicians and professionals who play chess. Ken mentioned that Flour Bluff could accomodate it in January, and other suggestions were also made.
b. The 2008-09 tournament schedule was approved, on motion by Bob and seconded by Mike, with universal acclamation. The following changes were noted: Wynn Seal tournament is set for Nov. 1; Laredo Region VII is Feb. 14; and IWA will host the Coastal Bend Grades on April 24. Discussion was made about the beginner's on Sept. 20 at John Paul II, and after the meeting a group convened to look at the facility and answer questions in preparation. Augie mentioned that the schedule was subject to change and not "set in stone."
c. Anissa Hernandez mentioned that she has connections with local media and Augie suggested she serve as the PR person.
d. Randy mentioned that Prescott Elementary will be seeking boards for a new chess club he and his wife are heading up there.
e. Gus mentioned that he will be trying to set up a chess club at Luther Jones, where his son Ethan attends. He is also looking for more local competitive chess opportunities for his son.
The next meeting date/location was not set.
I hereby declare that this is a true and correct rendition of my notes of the meeting held on August 10, 2008.
