Treasurer's Report
Chris Villarreal will present treasurer's report at the next meeting.
Pending Business
- Transfer of the funds from the UBS is pending their processing it. Ninfa will follow up with them on this.
Old Tournaments
- Don Morrison reported that there were about 180 players at the Region VIII tournament, including those in the open section. It ran smoothly. There was even a crossing guard to help children make their way to the cafeteria (skittles area).
Upcoming Tournaments
- There was an unfortunate typo in the announcement of the date of the CHS Royal Tournament, but it will take place as originally scheduled, February 5, 2011. Trophies have been ordered. George Tintera will serve as Chief TD for the tournament. Ninfa, Don, and Wes Anderson will be there to help. Other assistance is welcome.
- The flyer for the Shamrock Classic (March 5) is ready and will be posted soon. Chris Villarreal will serve as Chief TD. The Saint Patricks School Chess Club said it wants to offer a scholarship to attract high school players to the tournament. It asked that the OCBCF contribute to that prize. Further consideration of this request was tabled until the next meeting.
- Other tournaments are scheduled as posted on the Tournament Schedule 20102011.
New Business
- Ninfa Villarreal met with the Heritage Park Board to hear their presentation about installing chess tables at Heritage Park. The proposed tables would be sturdy, outdoor fixtures with either one or two boards embedded in the tops. There would be 15 of them in an outdoor area that was sheltered. The board was interested in how much the tables would be used and requested that the OCBCF indicate support in a letter. Further discussion of this request was tabled until the next meeting.
Public Comments
- Don Morrison reported that the Saint Patrick's Parrish Hall might be available for chess clubs to hold tournaments. Contact Don for pursuing this opportunity.
- Trent Burnett, a fixture at Cafe Calypso, said he welcomed chess players who want to practice their games to seek him out at the cafe. He does not teach chess and would refer those needing lessons to area teachers.
- Trent also reported that the Asian Cultural Art Museum wants to promote chess and possibly host a tournament. He also suggested that the OCBCF could look for financial support for encouraging participation of disabled chess players.
Next Meeting
- The next meeting will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 2 PM unless otherwise announced.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:58 PM.
I hereby declare that this is a true and correct rendition of my notes of the meeting held on January 30, 2011.
George Tintera, OCBCF Secretary
