Minutes of March 26, 2006 OCBCF Regular Meeting
Location: Susan Polgar Chess Center. Present (officers): George Tintera, President; Ken Muir, Secretary; Dan De Leon, 1st VP; Chris Villareal, Treasurer. Absent: Augie Rivera, 2d VP. Also present: Eddie Rios, Cris De Leon, Randy Ramirez, Elma Salazar, Bob & Lucy James, Ninfa Villarreal, Rosa Gonzalez.
George Tintera brought the meeting to order at 2:05.
Old business:
Augie is taking action to correct the franchise situation with the Texas secretary of state and will meet on that this week. Augie is still negotiating the insurance quote rates to get the best rate. The TD shirt/vest/cap idea was discussed, caps and vests did not seem to garner much support, and the committee will look into prices of T-shirts with pockets (Cris De Leon & Augie Rivera).
Old Tournaments:
Ken discussed the Flour Bluff tournament. It had approximately 187 players, and went well with the help of many volunteers, although the hallways seemed somewhat congested due to the fact that some were closed off. A large number of new players (over 40) were registered either with OCBCF assistance or on their own. Eddie discuessed the March Madness tournament in Kingsville and noted that the number of participants in out of town tournaments is dwindling, he had 54 players. Dan De Leon discussed the problem he had as a TD at the Spring Break Tuneup tournament.
New tournaments:
George and Ken discussed the April Girls Regional tournament to be held April 1. April 8 Coastal Bend Secondary (Kingsville), April 8 Magee Elementary Cool Cats Spring Tournament (Calallen), April 29--Coastal Bend Primary/Elementary Championship, Perez Elementary, May 6--IWA C.C. Coastal Bend Grades, and June 10--Cardinal Summer Chess Classic, Central Catholic Elementary tournaments were all mentioned.
New Business:
Chris Villarreal discussed the treasurers report and passed out copies. Balance as of 2/28/06 was $20,986.53.
Discussion was held concerning reasons for noted lower attendance at some tournaments recently in Kingsville and low registration numbers for the upcoming Girls Regional. Reasons mentioned were tournament "burnout," the high price of gasoline (for travel between cities), the high price of tournaments, and possible bad feelings between some of the sponsoring schools as factors. A lively discussion ensued. A possible solution was floated by Bob that attention needed to be paid on the scheduling of upcoming tournaments to ensure that tournaments scheduled for towns other than Corpus Christi be equitably spread throughout the calendar year, and so that conflicts between schools would be minimized.
A motion was made, and seconded, and passed unanimously, that proposals for dates for upcoming OCBCF-assisted tournaments of the 2006-07 school year be discussed during the May meeting, and that the proposals would then be passed to a scheduling committee with tentative action to be taken at the June meeting.
The next OCBCF meeting was set for April 30, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Polgar Center.
I hereby declare that the foregoing is a true and correct rendition of the minutes of the OCBCF meeting which occurred on this the 26th of March, 2006. ___________/s/_____________________ Kenneth M. Muir Secretary
