OCBCF
Minutes Of October 2008

In attendance: Augie Rivera, Chris Villarreal, George and Charlene Tintera, Ken Muir, Mike Wallett, Randy Ramirez, Don Morrison, and Corina Carter.

Location: The Tintera's house.

The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by Augie Rivera, President.

The minutes of the meeting of August 2008 were passed by motion, seconded and unanimously accepted.

Treasurer's report and financial update by Mike Wallett: The Treasurer reported a balance of 21,158.95 that do not reflect income from the Beginner's and Fall tournaments and expenses related to those same tournaments. The treasurer will print a copy of the minutes from the summer meeting showing new officers and present them to the Bank so that they can make a new signature card. Current officers will need to sign the card.

Old business:

a. The Beginner's tournament was held at John Paul II High School. There were about 85 players, outstanding facilities, abundant help from 'junior' tournament directors, and an enthusiastic start for the new year.

b. The Fall tournament was held at Calallen Middle School. There were 159 players in outstanding facilities thanks to Ninfa Villarreal and her colleagues at CMS. There were problems with the registration that were not corrected at check-in and took a couple of rounds to straighten out. There was one claim that T Ds were not attentive to improper use of a Mon Roi (an electronic chess notation device), but an investigation could not substantiate the claim. Suggestions include reminding players to have players call TD's by raising their hand as needed and (respectfully) call for another opinion if a problem is not resolved by the attending TD. The award ceremony was lengthy due to the number of participants and raffle.

New business:

a. In support of activity at new and growing clubs, the following motion was made, moved, seconded and unanimously approved: The OCBCF will donate 6 boards to Flour Bluff, 10 Boards to the Chess Club at Prescott Elementary (CCISD) and 15 boards to the chess club at Chula Vista Academy of Fine Arts (CCISD).

Upcoming tournaments

a. Chula Vista AFA tournament, October 18. The cafeteria will serve as the tournament hall. Anyone available is encouraged to turn up early to help set up the boards. Chief TD will be Chris Villarreal. He is taking entries through Thursday night by email. As with all first time tournament hosts, Corina Carter was concerned about the budget. Supporting comments included the following observations: entries tend to come in at the last minute, fundraising may contribute a large portion of the profit at the tournament, and CVAFA has an appropriate budget for its fixed cost (facility and trophies). Suggestions were made to document budgets so that future hosts can have a better idea of what to expect.

b. There is no word on the tournament at Wynn Seale Academy of Fine Arts on Nov 1.

c. There are several state and national tournaments between now and December. See the Tournament Schedule for a complete listing.

d. Windsor Park has made arrangements for the Share Your Christmas tournament to be held the first weekend in December but a flyer is not available yet.

Final Note:

Mr Jerry Wiser and his wife have lost their daughter in California to multiple sclerosis. Mr. Wiser has been a longtime friend of the OCBCF and we would like to extend our condolences. President Rivera will send a card on behalf of the OCBCF.

The next meeting date/location was not set.

I hereby declare that this is a true and correct rendition of my notes of the meeting held on October 12, 2008.

          George Tintera, OCBCF Secretary
