Location: Cafe Calypso in Corpus Christi.
The meeting was called to order by George Tintera at 3:15 pm (Augie Rivera arrived later).
The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved without objection.
Treasurer's Report
Chris Villarreal reported (through Ninfa) that he has not yet gotten a copy of the statement from the bank and will have to defer his report to the next meeting.
Old Business
- (TD's). Memberships were purchased for TD's: the Tintera's, Don Morrison, Mike Wallett, Chris Villarreal. Brenda Blum and Brad Kincaid were interested in becoming Club TD's. A summary page on how to enroll as a Club TD would help them. Similarly a page with basic info about how to advance from a Club TD would be helpful. For the mean time, http://main.uschess.org/component/option,com_uscf_dirlist/Itemid,412/ is a link to the Club TD application.
- Augie Rivera reported that he would be in contact this week with the CPA per the minutes of the previous meeting. He would see about sending the postcard filing to the IRS needed to maintain the OCBCF's non-profit status.
New Business
- It was proposed that we update the version of Win TD? in use on the OCBCF laptop. The current version is 4.1.1 and costs $90.
- It was suggested that we need to have a training session on using the wiki pages for ocbcf.org and Win TD?. Sunday, November 17 was suggested. Ninfa was going to look into a place.
- Bob suggested that the OCBCF should look into hosting the State Grades or some tournament with similar stature. This would be a goal that would give the organization something to shoot for. Bob, Ninfa and Brenda will investigate this idea as an exploratory committee and report back to the ocbcf.
- Ninfa will get 10 t-shirts of various sizes for TD's. The color would be the very distinctive and noticeable lime green.
Previous Tournaments
- SWO: The scholastic section chief was Bob James who was assisted by Charlene and George Tintera of the OCBCF. The room was filled to capacity with players. There was an issue with a touch move that was resolved by assigning a double win. Bob, who can discuss the details with interested parties, noted that this a claim of touch move is a tricky call for a TD to render a decision on. A note on the facilities: having parents an elevator ride away from the tournament hall was not well received by some families.
- Beginner's: As ever, Saint Patrick's School was an excellent host and provided outstanding facilities. There were 22 players in two sections, K-6 and MS/HS.
- Fall: The tournament was held in the ballroom. The pizza oven and bookstore were open this time. There were 79 players in 4 sections (K-1/Primary combined, Elementary, MS and HS). Prizes were awarded separately for the K-1 and Primary players even though they played as a section. There were several inquiries about the open, but no takers. There were a couple of requests by players to have their opponents penalized for not taking notation. Our General Rules do allow for that if the opponent knows how to take notation. It was announced before a later round that no one would be penalized for not taking notation. We will have to make sure that we have TD briefing sessions before future tournaments to be consistent in such calls. We may also want to review our General Rules at a future meeting.
Future Tournaments
- Chula Vista expressed an interest in hosting a tournament on November 6. Brenda Blum will check with the principal there and report to Ninfa Villarreal. Bob James offered to help.
- Flour Bluff expressed an interest in hosting the Share your Christmas tournament on December 4. He will check and report to Ninfa Villarreal.
- IWA expressed an interest in hosting the CB Grades in May and GP expressed an interest in hosting the CB Championships in April.
- These and other upcoming tournaments will be posted on the calendar.
Next Meeting
- The next meeting will be held on Sunday, November 14 at 2 PM.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 PM.
I hereby declare that this is a true and correct rendition of my notes of the meeting held on October 10, 2010.
