O.C.B.C.F. November Newsletter 2007

Magee Elementary hosted their annual tournament and had an excellent turnout. I believe the Wildcat Challenge TD’s were as follows.

The scorers were as follows:

This information provided by Ninfa Villarreal—There was also a long list of volunteers whom Mrs. Villarreal is grateful as well as sponsors. I am however short for time to get this information out to you. I will not be able to put in pictures, but Mrs. Villarreal did send me some and I will include them at a later date.

The Girls State Scholastic was not as heavily attended by many of the schools as I had hoped. However, there was approximately 150 total players in attendance. Although the attendance was low, the ratings of the players were varied and in some cases very high. These ladies came to play. See the press release to see who attended from our region and how they did. There was a dual scholarship awarded at this tournament by University of Texas at Dallas. The tournament went off smoothly in the hall. Susan Polgar put in her appearance and did a simul on Saturday. ST. Patricks had several players as well as Central Catholic and Magee Elementary and H.M.King Kingsville and Alice High School. Several of the girls in our area played well and placed. Congratulations to all.

Chula Vista so far has had the best turnout of all the tournaments hosted in our area. 146 players. The tournament Chief Td was Bob James who was assisted by Charlene Tintera and several others. Two teams who made their first appearance in force were Central Catholic and Memorial Middle School from Kingsville. I haven’t heard from the Chula Vista sponsor, but I hope to have some more details on the next month’s news letter. Alice attended as well as Magee and several other schools. Thank you for supporting this tournament. There is strength in numbers. Please don’t forget that these tournaments are also the club’s fund raisers.

Great News: Looking at the latest issue of the October USCF supplement, Several individuals from our Region are in the US Top 100’s. Congratulations ladies and gentlemen!

From the Editor: As some of you are aware, Attendance at these tournaments has been a little low. Most sponsors aren’t even offering a high school section, including myself. We have at least 3 die hard schools in the public system in Corpus. However, I know that this city has more schools than that. Sponsors are hard to find. Basically for two reasons. First and foremost is the fact that the sponsors feel they need to know enough about chess. This is not the case. All the sponsor needs to do is (1) provide a place for the students to play after school twice a week. (2)Disseminate tournament information to the players, and (3)help the players and club find some way to raise funds to help defer the cost of tournaments and equipment. The other reason is that the word must be spread and publicized often about the accomplishments of the individual clubs. Some districts are a little slow to recognize these accomplishments. Parents you too can become involved by talking to other parent with children in other schools and encourage them to get involved. I fear to think what would happen if we lost the support of the current sponsors. We must always be prepared to help and eventually replace these individuals with other qualified individuals. This takes time. Tournament Directors are always needed, and this takes time to properly instruct new tournament directors in the “Tournament Way”. These programs are designed with one thing in mind, Promoting chess for the kids in the Coastal Bend area. We must do it together. The fact that I am doing this newsletter is proof that anyone can help at any level. Get involved and donate some of your time. It is for the benefit of your children and the children of the Coastal Bend. Recruit new parents and help generate interest in Chess in the coastal bend area. Perhaps if the numbers Grow, CCISD will sit up and pay attention to our cause. You’re going to be at these tournaments anyway, get involved. Remember, without you, we have nothing. Thanks for your support

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS FOR NOVEMBER: The flyers can be found on the www.OCBCF.org website as well as South Texas Chess Associates and The South Texas Chess Center and Region 7 website and forum of the Texas Chess Association. Have fun and hope to see everyone at these tournaments.

Note of appreciation: Dr. George Tintera and Dr. Charlene Tintera: You two have been working very hard lately in order to keep this organization on track and to keep the tournaments going. I wish to recognize your leadership and thank you for your efforts. Mr. Bob James, Alma Salazar, Chris and Ninfa Villarreal, Burt, Russell, Judy Winston, Rebbecca Flannigan and all the other individuals who volunteer their time to help at tournaments and other functions. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO, AND WE APPRECIATE IT IF YOU KEEP DOING IT. THANKS
